Frederica Marshall

Frederica Marshall is available to teach workshops for private groups, art centers, museums and school programs.

She has taught workshops at the Ringling Museum of Art and the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Wildacres - North Carolina, Art Center Kadena - Okanawa, Japan, International Youth Organization - Tokyo, Japan. For the past nine years, Frederica has been an Artist in Residence in the Sarasota County Arts Council program “Artists in the Schools”.

Frederica has had more than 17,000 students of all ages from kindergarten to retirement homes. A joyous approach to creativity allows students of all ages to experience success and gain skills in their art creations.

TRAVELING BRUSH WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR
An exciting course to encourage and motivate those who have never painted, as well as those who wish to take full advantage of the medium's potential.

WATERCOLOR ON THE CREATIVE EDGE
This course is for intermediate and advanced painters. Paint on the right side of the brain! Visualize new ideas in new ways with a creative and professional teacher.

SUMI-E ORIENTAL BRUSH PAINTINGSumi-e Horse ? Frederica Marshall
This workshop is for students of all levels. The basic alphabet of brush strokes, composition, use of negative space, oriental perspective and philosophy will be demonstrated, discussed, and experienced. “To produce a stream of wind at the tip of the brush” sums up the vitality and vigor of Sumi-e painting.

Sumi-e Tao ? Frederica MarshallZEN BRUSH DANCE
Sumi-e ( Oriental Brush Painting ) from the Zen point of view. Learn to focus your Chi and control your breathing and brush strokes. Work with brushes from 12 inches to 5 feet tall. The dance of the big brush is transformed into a calligraphic stroke, recording the dancer's movement.

SUMI-E SQUARE WORD CALLIGRAPHY
It looks like Chinese, but it's English! Learn this new calligraphy form created by the Chinese artist Xu Bing. It takes a linear, phonetic system of writing and changes it into a character system based on the square. This workshop is of special interest to calligraphy groups to expand their possibilities in beautiful writing.

MANDALA LABYRINTHSpiral Mandala ? Frederica Marshall
Suitable for all levels of experience. Create your own mandalas to reveal inner visions, explore your personal symbols and learn to interpret archetypal images. Special emphasis will be placed on Jung's work with mandalas and Joan Kellogg's color and symbol studies. The labyrinth walk is a meditative experience, which is expressed in art materials.

SUMI NAGASHI - FLOATING INK
Marbleize paper in beautiful unexpected patterns the Japanese way. Work with traditional black ink as well as modern colors to create incredible designs to be used as backgrounds for watercolor paintings, stationery, gift wrap, collage, or work of art in their own right. These techniques are effective in watercolor or acrylic painting.
